About Time We Got the iPhone

If there’s one thing I’d like to see the Apple logo on, it would be my mobile phone. Sure, Apple does indeed make a phone; it’s called the iPhone, have you heard of it? Unfortunately, the lack of worldwide availability and the carrier-exclusiveness has put me off. Until now.

It’s funny how Apple began selling it solely in the United States. So the U.S. is Apple’s hometown; their backyard. So what? If they can distribute their Macs and iPods to Singapore, I don’t see what’s stopping them from bringing the iPhone here. Besides, the box ain’t that big you know. Just saying.

Then there’s carrier-exclusive. Ugh. Honestly, Apple thinks that the world would be better if iPhones were available through an exclusive mobile carrier in each country. That means if you’re on Cingular, T-Mobile, or Verizon, no can do. Please sign up with AT&T so we can make more money.

In reality, I think Apple could do us all a favour and sell it unlocked. Like use-it-on-any-mobile-carrier-anywhere-in-the-world unlocked. GSM ain’t that complicated you know; it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how to make calls or text message. Slip your SIM card into the phone and yak away.

That said, I’m glad Singtel (Singapore Telecom) has stepped up to the plate to “launch the iPhone later this year”. Vague, I know. This year can mean anytime now till Christmas. They claim that their ‘leadership position’ (they have 2.57 million mobile subscribers here) definitely ‘contributed to the iPhone deal’. Guys, quit tooting your horns, please.

Apparently, Starhub (which is the carrier I’m currently signed up with) has “indicated that it was confident of securing distribution deals”. I’ll try not to get my hopes up till I see it, but suffice to say, this year is shaping up to be a great one. The iPhone’s finally here, and quite possibly on more carriers than one.

Yea, my favourite. Literally.

The iPhone. The perfect gift this Christmas? Totally. Just wait and see.
